What is a Hearing Instrument Specialist?

Hearing Instrument Specialists

are licensed professionals with specialized training in assessing and addressing hearing loss. They:

  • conduct comprehensive hearing evaluations,
  • recommend appropriate hearing solutions,
  • provide counseling,
  • fit and dispense hearing aids tailored to individual needs,
  • provide aural rehabilitation, and
  • educate to help individuals adapt to their hearing instruments and improve communication in various environments.

Their expertise extends beyond technology—these professionals are highly knowledgeable about the auditory system and the latest advancements in hearing aid technology. Their role includes guiding patients on proper hearing aid use, developing personalized strategies for effective listening, and enhancing overall communication skills.

Board Certified Hearing instrument Specialists

BC-HIS is a hearing healthcare professional who is Board Certified in Hearing Instrument Sciences. That means they've taken extra measures to demonstrate their commitment to your hearing health by meeting specific continuing education requirements. Abiding by the NBC-HIS Code of Ethics, and NCCA guidelines, they operate at the highest level of competency set by international standards.

  • While the profession may be referred to by different titles—such as hearing instrument practitioners, hearing aid specialists, or hearing aid dispensers—the U.S. Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system officially recognizes them as "hearing aid specialists." Hearing Instrument Specialists meet all state or provincial licensing requirements, demonstrating their expertise through rigorous training and examination. Many pursue advanced credentials such as Advanced Hearing Aid Professional (AHAP) and Board Certification in Hearing Instrument Sciences (BC-HIS), further solidifying their commitment to excellence in hearing healthcare.
